PRESIDNET J.E.A. Mills has expressed disgust and revulsion at the profligate lives of customs officers, who after a few years of being appointed, construct huge mansions and buy posh cars whereas others in various public sector institutions wallow in poverty.
He said, the profligate attitude would not be tolerated in any such organisation and pledged to support all steps to sanitize the system.
President Mills was addressing Customs officials against the backdrop of a documentary, “Enemies of the Nation, The Dark Secrets of Tema Harbour”, filed by an investigate journalist, Mr Anas Aremeyaw Anas, when he paid an unannounced working visit to the Tema Port yesterday.
In an uncharacteristic angry mood, the President expressed worry that operation within the port community were not transparent, thus contributing to deprive the generality of Ghanaians of huge resources needed to transform their lives.
He said, if he had his own way, he would transfer or sack officials at the various ports and suggested to the Commissioner of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to compel those the division employed to declare their assets upon employment and do so from time to time.
“If it means transferring everybody, I will do so; if it means dismissing everybody found culpable, I’ll do so,” the President warned.
The Tema Habour, the biggest revenue collection center, has over the years come under a barrage of alleged acts of bribery and corruption, with CEPS officials said to have colluded with agents and institutions to defraud the state.
The documentary aired on Television stations across the country and published in the Crusading Guide newspaper showed officials of CEPS, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), National Security, Destination Inspection Companies (DICs), amongst others as well as agents colluding with each other in unpatriotic activities to deny the nation millions of cedis in revenue. The President advised the Customs Commissioner to ensure that, anybody who went to the port the name of the presidency was arrested.
He also expressed regret at the posture of the judiciary regarding the cocoa smuggling video of which the suspects standing trail for aiding smugglers to cart out the cocoa to neighboring Cote D’ Ivoire were discharged for lack of prosecution.
The President pointed out that, monies belonging to the nation found its way into the pockets of self-seeking individuals who consider their interest paramount to that of the nation.
He noted that, surveys conducted on the country on investment opportunities places Ghana in the lower league although the country has obtained a self acclaimed status of being a gateway to the rest of Africa whereas corruption remains tops.
President Mills warned that, he would allow the laws take its cause towards ensuring sanity prevails across board.
“Look at the number of people who can hardly makes ends meet, afford education and access medical care due to the unavailability of resource at their disposal although they have the rights to do so,” he lamented.
He gave his full backing to decisions being implemented by the Commissioner of Customs Division of the GRA, Major Carl Modey to dismiss officers found to have compromised their positions. He also called for in-depth investigations into the operations of GCNET to help sanitize matters.
Later in an interaction with the agents, President Mills charged them to desist from the payment of enticement fees to aid officials in carrying out their legitimate duties.
President Mills was accompanied by Finance Minister, Dr Kwabena Duffour, Director General of the GPHA, Mr Nestor Percy Galley and other government officials.

LION'S CLUB ASSISTS ATUA GOVT HOSPITAL, DAILY GRAPHIC, THUR FEB 3, 2011 (PAGE 23)
THE Lions Club of Tema has donated 10 wheel chairs valued at the cost of GHC2000 to the Atua Government Hospital in the Lower Manya Krobo District in the Eastern Region.
The donation followed an appeal made on behalf of the hospital and the people of the area by a resident of the community, Mrs Margaret Padi, on the difficult manner in which patients, particularly, the elderly were moved through and from the hospital and within the various areas of the facility.
She was concerned about the fact that patients in severe pains had to get down from vehicles and manage to walk to be able to see medical personnel.
Making the donation, the immediate past Zonal Chairperson (IPZC) for Zone 161 of the Lion Club’s International, Ms Kate Baaba Hudson said, the presentation was in line the club’s monthly activity and also forms part of their social responsibility and the beginning of various outreach programmes outlined for the year.
The programmes according to her were aimed at reaching out to deprived communities and societies outside their catchment area of operation.
That she said was an indication towards achieving the Lion’s Club International’s thematic declaration of ‘Beacon of Hope’ for the year 2011.
Ms Hudson was optimistic; the donation would be utilized effectively by hospital officials as they made strides towards providing quality healthcare.
The IPZC said, the Tema Lion’s Club was a member of Region 16 of the LCI which is made up of 12 Lion’s Club which is made up of 12 Lion’s Club in Ghana which are part of the District 403-A. The district body comes under the umbrella body of the Lion’s Club International which has its headquarters in Chicago, USA.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, Mr Isaac Agbo Tettey, who received the items on behalf of the hospital, commended the club for the gesture which he said would go a long way to alleviate basic logistic problems facing the facility.
He pointed out that, the facility which serves as a referral center for the Yilo Krobo, Upper Manya, Dangme West and the Asuogyaman District Assemblies has been under enormous pressure.
The hospital according to Mr Tettey has not seen any major renovation over the last 30years, while link roads connecting the facility were in deplorable conditions.
“Although the assembly has over the past few years developed blueprints towards improving upon quality healthcare and education in the district, inadequate financial constraints were thwarting efforts”, Mr Tettey lamented.
He has thus appeal to the incoming Health Minister, Mr Joseph Yileh Chireh to as a matter of urgency visit the facility as he seeks first hand information on the state of health deliver in the hinterland.
The Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Alexander Osei-Bonsu on the other hand called for more assistant from corporate institutions towards alleviating the facility. That he said would contribute meaningfully towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals that sought to provide access to affordable healthcare to all.

SECURITYMAN'S BODY FOUND WITH BULLET WOUNDS, (DAILY GRAPHIC, MON 24 JAN, 2011, PAGE 51)
A SECURITY officer of real estate company, Trasacco has been gunned down by unknown assailants at a site under construction by the company at Adei-Kojo, near Ashaiman.
The deceased, Geroge Stephenson Akakpo, 49 was found dead Saturday morning according to eyewitnesses was believed to have been shot by land guards operating in the area.
Family members of the deceased who spoke to this reporter claimed they became alarmed worried when he failed to return from work the previous evening.
According to Mr Henryford Akakpo, brother of the deceased, he received a call on his brother’s disappearance at about 10:30pm Friday night from the wife.
“After frantic search at his duty post failed, we lodged a complaint at the East Legon Police station that were able to establish that, the deceased was detailed to the Adei-Kojo site the previous day to kept watch by his employers,” Mr Akakpo stated. The case according to him was thus referred to the Ashaiman Police Station for further investigation when their search yielded no results.
He said officials of Trasacco on Saturday morning detailed personnel to the site to continue the search, where the deceased was found lying in a pool of blood with a double barrel gun by his side in addition to two mobile phones belonging to him. A careful examination on the body revealed, the deceased was shot on the left side of his neck.
A Ford ranger vehicle which he sent to the site was also found intact when the team including the police visited the scene.
The Ashaiman District Police Commander, Superintendent Peter Kobina who confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic said the body has been deposited at the police hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy while investigations have been launched into the incident.
According to him, although they were yet to establish the actual cause of death, preliminary investigations revealed the deceased died as a result of gunshot wounds.

HELP DEVELOP TEMA MARKET...Nii Adjei Kraku (PAGE 22, JAN 19, 2011)
THE Tema Mantse,Nii Osonga Adjei Kraku II, has called on members of the Emmanuel Association, made up of traders in Tema and its environs, to contribute their quota towards the development of the Tema Central Market.
According to him, the traditional council and the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) cannot construct certain facilities in the market immediately, but their contributions as an association can make the market a better place.
Nii Kraku made the appeal at the inauguration of the association where members demonstrated unity and love.
The inauguration of the group was the first of its kind among the market groupings in the Tema Metropolis, and had the aim of taking care of its members especially in times of need.
Nii Kraku charged members of the association, particularly the women to embark on regular clean-up exercises as they made strides to ensure a clean and safe environment as their contributions to the health needs of thousands of consumers patronising their produce.
The patron of the association, Mr Prince Robert Obeng Mensah, said the association, which started from a humble beginning with 12 members, could now boast of about 250 members.
According to him, the membership of the association included plantain sellers, professional shoe sellers, shoe makers, businessmen and women, drivers, cassava sellers, civil servants, police officers, tea sellers and second, hand cloth dealers.
Mr Mensah urged individual groupings to embrace the idea of unionisation in their various fields to help promote their interests while safeguarding their investments.
Members of the association presented three hospital beds worth GH¢1,500 to the Tema General Hospital as part of their social responsibility.
The President of the association, Ms Comfort Ofori,who presented the items on behalf of the group, was optimistic that the donation, though small, would go a long way to reduce pressure on the existing facilities at the hospital.
The Health Service Administrator of the hospital, Mr Samuel Obeng Mensah, who received the beds on behalf of management,appealed to the general public to support the hospital as it made strides to deliver quality healthcare to the public.

HOSPITAL HOLDS GET-TOGETHER FOR CLIENTS (PAGE 29, JAN 12, 2011)
THE New Crystal Hospital at Ashaiman has organised an end-of-year get-together for its clients and stakeholders at a ceremony at Ashaiman.
The programme, which formed part of the hospital’s social responsibility, was aimed at strengthening relationship between the hospital and its clients.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the facility, Dr Wisdom Amegbletor, said the gesture, which was the first of its kind, would be an annual affair.
He said the management and staff of the hospital were committed to the delivery of quality health care to its teeming clients and the general public.
Dr Amegbletor hinted of plans to register many of its clients under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to help patients spend little of their income on health-related issues.
He appealed to the residents to seek regular medical attention rather than waiting until sicknesses had a toll on them.
The Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Mr Numo Adinortey Addison, said his outfit attached special importance to health issues as a result of its socio-economic impact in the municipality.
According to him, statistics of outpatient department attendance (OPD) recorded in various health facilities across the municipality clearly demonstrated that the residents were making considerable efforts on their well-being.
He, however, expressed worry about the increase in malaria, respiratory tract infection and diarrhoea.
Mr Numo mentioned other common diseases in the area as skin infections, ulcers, hypertension and charged stakeholders to intensify public sensitisation on them.
The MCE stated that more than 37,484 were registered under the NHIS in 2010, which was an improvement over the 27,545 recorded in 2009.
He assured the residents that the government was working tirelessly to fulfil the one-time premium payment of the NHIS.
Mr Numo also underscored the need for stakeholders to step up the HIV and AIDS campaign as part of strategies aimed at reducing infection rates within the municipality.
Managers of the hospital also unveiled three new herbal products, the crystalenia malaria treatment herbal medicine, crystal balm liniment and crystal tea, as additions to the herbal treatment services which the facility also provides in complement to the facility’s existing services.
Present at the ceremony was the regent of Ashaiman, Nii Adjor Annang.

RELIGIOUS BODY ASSISTS ORPHANAGE (PAGE 22, JAN 8, 2011)
THE Miracle Temple of the International Central Gospel Church at Tema Community 12, has donated assorted items to the Hearts of the Fathers’ Orphanage at Ningo in the Dangme West District in the Greater Accra Region.
The items, worth GH¢20,000, included a double door refrigerator, a deep freezer, aluminium saucepans, television sets, toiletries, food items, groceries,second hand clothing, cooking oil, foot wears and books.
The donation also formed part of the church’s annual charity programme to the home. The programme, which was in its fourth year, also saw members painting the entire home.
They also provided carpet for the dinning area for inmates and replaced broken louvre blades and faulty electricity bulbs.
Presenting the items, Mrs Lilian Kissi, the wife of the head pastor of the church, said the presentation formed part of the church’s social responsibility to the needy.
According to her, Deuteronomy 15 verse 7 stated that “If there is a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord is giving you, do not harden your heart, but rather open up your hands wide and willingly lend him sufficiently”.
According to her, the scriptures served as a motivation for the church to put smiles on the faces of the children.
“It was for these reasons that the church, as an embodiment of Christ, would want to provide a balance home set up for children who have been orphaned through no fault of theirs,” Mrs Kissi said.
She said that reflected in the church’s commitment to provide assistance to the children who might be experiencing difficulties and rejection from society.
Mrs Kissi was optimistic that the managers of the home would use the items in a judicious manner for an improvement in the living conditions of the inmates.
The mother of the home, Mrs Esther Gozo, who received the items, was grateful to the church for the gesture.
She said the home had acquired a 9.4 acre piece of land for a school and a vocational centre to provide skill training to inmates, as well as deprived children within the Ningo community.
Mrs Gozo said the facility would also contain an infirmary for inmates, as well as a community clinic to provide health delivery for the residents.
Mrs Gozo said the lack of funds had stalled the projects.

According to her, Deuteronomy chapter 15 verse 7 states that: “If there is a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord is giving you, do not harden your heart, but rather open up your hands wide and willingly lend him sufficiently.”
The scripture, according to her, serves as a motivation for the church to put smiles on the faces of the children and make positive differences in their lives. “It was for this reason that the church, as an embodiment of Christ, would want to provide a balanced home set-up for children who have been orphaned through no fault of theirs,” Mrs Kissi said.
That, according to her, reflects in the church’s commitment to provide assistance to the children who may be experiencing difficulties and rejection from society.
Mrs Kissi expressed the hope that the managers of the home would use the items in a judicious manner to improve the living conditions of the inmates.
The Mother of the home, Mrs Esther Gozo, who received the items on behalf of the home, commended the church for the gesture.
She stated that the home had acquired a 9.4acre land for development into a school and vocational centre to provide skills training for inmates as well as deprived children within the Ningo community. The facility, she said, would also have an infirmary for inmates as well as a community clinic to provide health delivery for residents.
Mrs Gozo said the lack of funds had stalled the project and appealed to corporate institutions and individuals to come to the aid of the home as they made strides towards integrating orphaned and abandoned children into society.
